Traveling with a baby can be daunting and can make the most relaxed families anxious but —it can even be fun—with the right prep. Here’s some practical tips to make your trip smoother:
✈️ Before You Go
• Plan Around Baby’s Schedule: Try to book flights or drive during nap times or when your baby is generally more chill.
• Check Airline Policies: Different airlines have different rules about lap infants, stroller checks, bassinets, etc. Check out if you can buy a seat for your infant (Under 2)
• Accommodation: Look for baby-friendly places (cots, kitchenettes, laundry facilities). Airbnb and family suites at hotels can be lifesavers.
🧳 Packing Essentials
• A good changing bag: Nothing worse than rummaging trying to find the nappy cream, invest in a good changing bag to make searching effortless.
• Nappies & Wipes: Pack more than you think you’ll need for the travel day. But don’t forget you can buy where ever you go.
• Change of Clothes: For baby and you
• Snacks & Formula/Breastfeeding Supplies: Airlines allows you to bring formula, milk, or baby food in reasonable amounts—even if over 100ml.
• Toys or Comfort Items: Something familiar to soothe them. Amazon selling some great spinning toys with suction to attach to the window or table tray.
• Baby Carrier: Think hands free on the flight, also keeps tiny babies close and comforted.
• Lightweight Stroller: If you bring one, choose something compact that you can fold with one hand if you’re on your own and can fit in the overhead locker.
• Sun Shade for the Pram/Stroller: Make sure you buy a reputable sunshade that will keep your baby cool. Don’t cover your baby in a blanket to prevent them overheating.
🛫 At the Airport / In Transit
• Feed During Takeoff/Landing: Let them feed as you take off it helps with ear pressure or even a dummy can offer some comfort and relief.
• Use a Baby Carrier Through Security: Airports lets you wear baby through metal detectors, they may swab your hands after but generally there’s no fuss.
• Board Early: Most airlines allow families to pre-board. Take advantage of that time to get settled but if you have a toddler I always tell families with designated seats not to board till that last moment let them burn off that energy before boarding.
🌍 At Your Destination
• Baby-Proof the Room: Scan for sharp corners, cords, or reachable objects.
• Stick to Routine (as best you can): Familiar bedtime routines help babies settle in unfamiliar places.
• Know Where Help Is: Locate the nearest accident and emergency and a local pharmacy—just in case.
🌞 Extra Tips
• Stay Flexible: Babies can be unpredictable. Be ready to pivot plans.
• Take Breaks Often: Whether it’s a long walk or just time in the shade, downtime keeps everyone sane.
• Travel Insurance: Don’t chance leaving the UK without it. It’s not worth the stress.
• Take an inflatable padding pool: Lots of hotels don’t have baths but a small paddling pool in the shower can take the stress out of washing a toddler
