Dr Amit Patel
Dr Amit Patel is a best-selling author, broadcaster and DEI consultant. Prior to losing his sight overnight in 2013, Amit worked as a doctor, specialising in emergency medicine. Since then, Amit has been on a journey to learn to live with his sight loss, from learning how to make a cup of tea again to walking using a white cane.
Today, Amit is an active campaigner for accessibility, diversity and inclusion, speaking out about the issues that disabled people face daily. Amit was matched to Kika, his first guide dog in 2015 and Kika was the inspiration for Amit’s first book, ‘Kika & Me’ which was published in 2020. You can also follow Amit & Kika on their adventures on the popular CBeebies show Dog Squad. Now a father of 2 (6 and 3) Amit is the hands-on dad he’s always wanted to be, often found on the school run, he’s become a pro at packing a bento lunch box. Amit talks openly about his experiences of being a blind parent, from the humorous nappy changes to the heart-breaking comments he's overheard at baby groups questioning his ability because he can't see. Amit has found his own way of doing things without sight, proving that sight loss is no barrier to being a parent.
